The pepper derives most of its virtues capsaicin , the chemical compound that gives it its pungency and causes the burning sensation on our taste buds. The stronger a pepper is, the more it is rich in capsaicin.

Capsaicin decreases appetite by increasing the feeling of satiety. It boosts up the metabolism and aids to "burn" fat . 
Its action on digestion , infections , inflammation , sweat , and convulsions has been demonstrated.
